An experimental improvisational drum solo using ambient music as the inspiration. An idea I have had for a while now finally comes to life, many thanks to Wild Stag Studio for filming, George at Small Pond for recording and Jack for supply the wonderful ambient landscape.
Been experimenting in my new drum studio-shed with a few favourite rudiments.
The Paradiddle-diddle is a great rudiment and here I have switched the 2nd diddle to the beginning of the rudiment, so the sticking is then led with the left hand. LLRLRR Instead of RLRRLL. Put between the hats and the snare drum its quite a tasty groove.
Also was an experiment with recording the drums through addictive drums and layering over the video, which I think works well!
Last year I took part and won August’s edition of DrumOffTV’s 30 second drum solo competition. Along with the other 9 winners from 2013 we recorded an album at Metropolis studios. A film has now been made documenting the recording day and finding out about all the drummers involved in the project, including an interview with yours truly! You can watch this here if you like…
Travelled up to Metropolis studio in London on Sunday for the 2013 drum off tv winners recording day. It was a fantastic day, got to meet the wonderful guys and work in a legendary studio. The day included recording a track with the house band that will be released as an album on rhythm section records, recording my 30 second winning solo and doing a solo interview. I will posting up link when I have them so stay tuned. Thom.x

I have a brand new section to my site entitled “Drum Solos”, and it contains drum solos, wierdly. On there I have a live recording of a piece written when I was studying my music degree, a jazz style piece and a new addition an Afro-cuban style solo both recorded in my home studio. I will be updating this section with more pieces in different genres to promote my drum tracking recording service.
